Summer at the Canvas

Whether you are a performer, painter, or art lover, there is a ton of opportunities here at the Canvas this summer.  Get involved and make some stuff with us!

1. Maskmaking and Parade Propmaking
Thursday, May 30, 5-7 pm
Cost: Free

















Maskmaking and parade prop making will be every Thursday in May from 5-7 pm. Masks and props will be sculpted in clay and then paper mached and painted. From start to finish they will take at least 3 sessions.  If possible bring paper and plastic bags as well as cardboard boxes to share. The Heartwood Parade will be Saturday June 1st at 10 am. Both the parade and the mask making are open to the neighborhood!


2. Open Mic
Thursday, May 30, 6–8 pm (Sign up at 5 pm)
Cost: Free






















For poets, rappers, singers or anyone with something to say! You can also just come to watch, cheer on your friends, or hear something new. Come early to sign up. OPEN TO ALL AGES.


3. Art Field Trips
Thursday, June 6, 4-7 pm
Cost: Free



















Get in the van and take an Art Field with other young artists.  This month we will going to the Soul Sounds Open Mic (hosted by Tish Jones every Thursday from 6pm-8pm). Special writing workshop at 5pm. All ages are welcome, and there is no cover charge.


4. Action Through Acting: A Youth Developed Theater Production
AUDITIONS: June 17 and 19 from 2-4:30 pm
CLASS: June 25-July 3, Tuedays, Wednesdays and Thurdays noon-4 pm
Cost: Free






















This summer at the Canvas youth will make theater based on their lives. Participants will spend time building community, developing characters, learning the basics of theater, creating scenes, and choreographing their production.

Before you can participate YOU MUST -
Fill our an Application. Applicants must be 13-18 years old. Applications are due Friday, June 7th and found here.

Show up on June 17 and 19 from 2:00-4:30 for community building, theater basics, and auditions. Auditions should include 5 minutes of prepared material. This can be song, monologue, spoken word, drumming, beat boxing, dance, etc. Participants are welcome to prepare more than one medium for their audition. 



5. Photography Mondays
Mondays from July 8-August 26 from 1-4 pm
Cost: Free




















This summer we'll be doing an exploration-style photography group at the Canvas. We'll meet on Mondays and then bus to a different part of town each week to photograph our surroundings. We may go to the Como Zoo, Downtown Saint Paul, the Mississippi River and more. The locations can be determined by the group.

Bus fare will be paid for by the Canvas. Bring your camera if you have one, otherwise the Canvas will have some to use.

We are looking for an Art Exhibition Intern





The Canvas Teen Art Center is looking for an
ART EXHIBITION INTERN
Deadline: 2/18/13

JOB DESCRIPTION 
Work with Canvas and Saint Paul Park and Rec staff to produce, install, and deinstall the
Canvas Teen Art Exhibition as part of the St. Paul Art Crawl. Other duties listed below.

·     Help coordinate marketing and communications with young artists and schools
·     Participate and take notes in the planning meetings
·     Coordinate drop off and pick of artwork
·     The internship will run from late February through early May. The internship requires approximately 5–10 hours a week with more hours the week of April 22.
·     Applicants must be available the week of April 22 and Wednesdays from 4­–6 pm.  Additionally, applicants must be available from 9 am–9 pm on Saturday, April 27.Times are flexible, but should be outlined in advance with the Arts Coordinator and team. A stipend of $500 will be issued  - payment to be discussed upon hiring


QUALIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS
·     Experience working with youth
·     Background in the arts, preferably visual arts
·     Interest in arts education
·     Able to manage basic artwork hanging and display using paint, tools and hardware as needed
·     Proficiency in a variety of social networking platforms.
·     Basic computer skills. Graphic design skills a bonus, but not required.
·     Experience installing art is a plus.
·     Ability to get work done on your own time (not always supervised)
·     Organized work style and good communication skills (answering questions, sending e-mail replies, etc.)
·     Basic administrative skills and ability to meet deadlines
·    Job recipient will be required to pass a background check.
